A Day at the Garden

Lovely day to paint a garden today. Had to finish the painting in the studio from my photos since a group of people came along who were part of an assemblage for an anniversary or a wedding. And I had been so content there before their arrival.  They were in my space! So I finally packed up and left. This was the best view, so I don't plan to go back there again. But I wanted to finish it on the same day, while the feeling was still with me.

On a perfect painter's day, sunny and warm, late afternoon sun abounding, I spent 3 more hours completing this painting. I had spent a couple of hours at the same spot last weekend, doing the sketch for this painting, and then used my time today to paint it with watercolor. Fabulous day for painting, and I've been longing for that kind of day to appear!

 House in Birmingham with a History

Painted outdoors in Birmingham MI recently. Finally had some weather that wasn't too hot to do so. Plein Air painting is one of my favorite activities. I painted this home from two points of view. I feel like I may have had enough of "charming" to keep me happy for a while.


The second viewpoint is pictured below. A shady spot across the street allowed me some comfort on the day I painted this. Massive trees flank the home, so I only painted part of each so as not to overpower the house

Ann Arbor, Michigan, makes this farm property available to the public, and it's truly a favorite spot of mine, that never fails to fill me with good feelings, and a wealth of imagery waiting to be painted.

A wonderful trip to Taos New Mexico, while teaching a painting workshop there, inspired this painting. My sojourn was at the Mabel Dodge Luhan House there, a wonderful retreat kind of setting, full of Southwest ambiance.
