The Figure is Back in My Life

The two figure drawings today are from the drop in class I attend. They haven't reproduced here in as deep values as the originals exhibit. The piece on the left is one I drew directly with a brush on black paper, using gouache, an opaque water based medium I often prefer for figure work.

The figure below is one I began using a grease pencil. As the drawing seemed to take shape, I decided to create more dimension by using wastercolor paint and a soft brush. I first began moving the negative shapes back, but decided then to pull the figure out still more with the dark shadows on its dominant forms. Loved it when I added those darks. Then I knew I was finished. It's my favorite figure this season, and I'm sure I'll use this approach again in the future.
